King Abdulaziz City for Science AND Technology (KACST) is an independent scientific Saudi organization. It has been established in 1977 under the name of Saudi Arabian National Center for Science AND Technology (SANCST) and later on renamed 'King Abdulaziz City for Science AND Technology (KACST) in 1985.
KACST is governed by a Supreme Committee chaired by the Prime Minister (the King) and composed of the ministers of the major ministries to which science and technology are of great relevance.
KACST has supported many scientific research projects for the purpose of serving developmental issues in the various sectors. These research projects have yielded good results from which the various parties of both the private and public sectors have benefited. KACST has also provided scientists, researchers and students in Saudi universities with considerable support and services.
KACST is also considering implementation of many research projects in its well equipped labs and research centers. Such projects help in solving many developmental problems encountered in the different areas of both public and private sectors.
KACST maintains effective relationship with many countries, ratifying cooperative agreements with countries such as South Africa, Germany, China, India, Japan, Pakistan, USA, Russia, France and Czech Republic. It also collaborates with many international organizations, such as European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), not to mention the majority of Islamic scientific networks and world scientific unions.
The efforts of KACST in the area of science and technology have culminated in the approval of the National Policy of Science and Technology by the Council of Ministers. The policy is regarded as the first step towards accomplishing the strategies and plans required for implementing the policies of the Comprehensive National Plan for Science and Technology, which outlines and defines the future directives for establishing a system for science, technology and innovation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
KACST has successfully accomplished the first four year plan for science and technology (1427/1428-1431/1432H) in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Planning and participation of many related parties. The government has allocated approximately SR8 billion for the plan.
The above efforts will hopefully boost scientific research, thus leading to optimal realization of the policies outlined in the plan. This is especially true in presence of the other success factors such as clear vision, careful planning and implementation, and active participation of related parties. Relative available local and international expertise are always utilized for reaching such goals.
